I have been doing some research on how to reduce my backpacking weight as in recent years there has been a huge jump in products that are more compact and lightweight. The Western Uplands trail will be a good test to see if I’ve learned anything!  My pack weighed in a 27lbs when we left and 21 pounds when I returned home. I have also been doing some experimenting with food which I will post in a separate blog.

I was hiking on the Western Uplands (the third loop) last week, and I saw you sharing your gears and trips here. What's your tent/shelter? Maybe I missed it on your list? Thank you so much!

Btw, I also saw your recent post about your husband rescued the swimmers in Algonquin. You are truly hero. I mostly paddle whitewater and always wear dry suit if the water is cold. Last March, when I paddled on Credit River with my group, I saw two men who didn't really have canoe skills and they didn't wear any drysuit or wetsuit. They dumped in the river pretty quickly, and were rescued by our group. They were so miserable as it was snowing. Luckily, Credit River is very close to the city, and they took a taxi back. Thank you for sharing your post. Your post is very likely to save a lot of precious lives in the future!

Hi there,

On the Western Uplands we carried the MSR Hubba Hubba tent. A month later on the Highlands Backpacking loop we carried the Marmot Tungsten UL2 which is lighter, way roomier and has a polyester fly (more hydrophobic). Hope that helps.
